Good morning, Henry County. Coffee in hand? Let’s go!

A daughter stepped to a microphone at her father's funeral and announced she's running for his congressional seat.

A new literacy law just landed that could determine whether your K-2 kid moves up to the next grade.

County commissioners approved a $30,000 pool safety program.

And this week, Henry County is showing up for the people who show up for us; Nurses eat free today, and teachers eat free tomorrow morning at Whataburger.

We've also got the history hiding in plain sight at Arabia Mountain, along with a full calendar of events.

Now let's get into it.🦅👁️

Congressman Scott's Daughter Steps Up to Run for His Seat

GEORGIA — Marcye Scott, daughter of the late Congressman David Scott, announced at her father’s funeral Saturday that she’s running for Georgia’s 13th Congressional District seat, which includes parts of Henry County.

Scott has worked on her father’s campaigns and fundraising efforts for more than two decades, and Governor Kemp has scheduled the special election for Tuesday, July 28.

In interviews following the announcement, Scott said she knows the district “better than anyone” and spoke emotionally about continuing her father’s legacy. See exactly what Marcye said about carrying her father's legacy at FOX 5 Atlanta →

A New Georgia Literacy Law, And What It Means for Henry County Schools

GEORGIA — Governor Kemp signed the Georgia Early Literacy Act into law yesterday, committing $70 million to place literacy coaches in schools serving kindergarten through third grade across Georgia.

The push comes as state data shows roughly 62% of Georgia third graders are not reading proficiently.

The law also strengthens early reading intervention requirements and expands literacy screening and support for struggling readers. See what the new law requires of Henry County Schools at Atlanta News First →

Henry County Just Approved a $30,000 Pool Safety Program

HENRY COUNTY — Henry County Commissioners approved a new partnership Tuesday with Kaiser Foundation Health Plan of Georgia to launch Operation Splash, a community aquatic education program focused on water safety and physical activity at the new Henry County Aquatic Center and Water Park. Kaiser is putting up $30,000 in sponsorship funding, and the county will run the program. With pool and lake season heating up, the timing on this one couldn't be sharper. Arabia Mountain Has Been Keeping Secrets

STOCKBRIDGE - Most of us have driven past Arabia Mountain without giving it a second thought. Turns out, we've been missing a lot.

Images of America: Arabia Mountain National Heritage Area, released last month, is the first book ever written about this stretch of southeast Metro Atlanta, covering Arabia Mountain, Lithonia, Flat Rock, and Panola Mountain, including parts that stretch into Stockbridge right here in Henry County.

The stories inside are wild. Quarry workers who cut the stone that built the Brooklyn Bridge. Trappist monks in Conyers who marched with Dr. King. Civil rights heroes from Lithonia that most people have never heard of. Over 200 photos, many never before published, bring all of it to life.

The authors aren't outsiders. Jeff Dingler and Brigette Jones both work for the Arabia Alliance, the organization that stewards this land every day. Dingler has written for the Washington Post and New York Magazine. Jones is a Smithsonian-certified historian and one of Garden and Gun's 30 Southern Heroes. They know this place deeply, and it shows.

There's also a never-before-seen photo of then Senator John F. Kennedy tucked inside. We’ll leave it at that.

If you've ever been curious about the history sitting right outside your door, this is the book. It's $24.99 and available now at Barnes and Noble, Amazon, and arabiaalliance.org.
