McDonough Walking Club Turns Simple Steps Into Community Connection

MCDONOUGH - What started as one resident’s passion for wellness has grown into a monthly gathering focused on movement, motivation, and community spirit. The McDonough Walking Club invites neighbors of all ages and fitness levels to slow down, enjoy nature, and take small steps toward healthier living together.
Founded by Maclin Williams, the group was created to encourage conversations around physical health, mental wellness, and building stronger community ties through regular exercise. Walkers meet on the first Saturday of each month at 8:30 a.m. at Jonesboro Road Park, where a relaxed 30 to 40-minute walk offers both fresh air and fellowship.
Over time, the club has partnered with local organizations to host wellness events and connect residents with helpful resources. Organizers say the goal is simple. Create a welcoming space where people can move, meet new faces, and feel supported at every stage of life. Click Here For More
A New Chapter in Local Leadership This Black History Month

STOCKBRIDGE — This Black History Month, change is taking shape across Henry County as a new generation of leaders steps into city hall. At just 22 years old, Stockbridge Mayor Jayden Williams is already turning heads as one of the youngest mayors in the country. Only months into the role, the longtime community member says he feels optimistic about what is ahead and focused on bringing people together to move the city forward.
Williams’ victory marked a shift in local leadership and reflects how far political representation has come in small towns across Georgia. Residents say seeing young Black leaders step into public office feels like a full circle moment during a month that honors history and progress.
In neighboring McDonough, Mayor Kam Varner also made history as the first person raised in historic Blacksville to be elected mayor. Now beginning her first term, Varner says she plans to bring true bipartisan leadership to the role while strengthening infrastructure, improving transparency, and building a stronger partnership with Henry County.
Together, both leaders represent a new era in local government, one shaped by fresh voices, community roots, and a shared vision for growth.

Young Artists Invited to Share Their Creativity in the Congressional Art Competition
HENRY COUNTY — Calling all young creatives. The annual Congressional Art Competition is now open, giving local high school students a chance to turn their creativity into national recognition. This year’s theme, Georgia on My Mind, encourages students to create artwork inspired by the places, culture, and stories that make the state special. The winning artwork may be displayed in the U.S. Capitol, where millions of visitors view the exhibit each year.
The competition is open to grades 9 through 12 and accepts original two-dimensional artwork, including painting, drawing, photography, mixed media, and computer generated art. Students should submit a clear digital image taken in natural light along with a Student Information and Release Form.
Important note: Submission deadlines vary by congressional district. Some districts have an earlier February 20 deadline, while students in Georgia’s 10th District must submit by March 16, 2026. Families are encouraged to confirm their district before sending artwork.
