The Eagle Eye Digest, keeping an eye on all things Henry County
Henry County, GA
Issue No. 179

Good morning, Henry County!

Is your house a little louder this morning? It’s fall break for every Henry County Schools student this week. We’ve got a few ideas to keep them busy further down.

But first, the clock is ticking. Today is the last day to register to vote before November 3. It takes about two minutes, and we’ve got the link.

Also inside: a free clinic on wheels is pulling up to your local library. Our County Commission Chair grew up around civil rights legends, and she tells us the lesson that stuck.

And small business owners, there’s free help sitting on the table that most of you haven’t touched.

Oh, and last week you told us you wanted to meet each other. So we’re setting the table.

Let’s get into it. 🦅👁️

The Eagle Eye Table. Our first dinner is October 29. McDonough, 6:30 PM. Reserve your seat.

THE EAGLE EYE TABLE

You said, “Tell me more.” So here it is.

Last week, we asked whether Eagle Eye readers would be interested in meeting new people from around Henry County over dinner.

A lot of you were curious.
So we’re opening the first Eagle Eye Table.
Thursday, October 29 at 6:30 PM in McDonough

You’ll reserve your seat and answer a few simple questions so we can get to know you. We’ll use those answers to create small tables of 6 with people we think you’ll enjoy meeting.

This isn’t a dating event. It isn’t a networking mixer.
It’s good food, good conversation, and a chance to meet people in Henry County you might not otherwise cross paths with.

We'll reveal the restaurant the morning of the dinner.
Registration closes October 27.
Seats are limited.

CARE COMES TO YOU

A Free Doctor’s Visit Is Coming to Your Neighborhood. Here’s Who Qualifies

HENRY COUNTY - Henry County is rolling out a new mobile medical clinic to bring health care closer to uninsured residents.

Hope in Motion will serve uninsured Henry County residents ages 18 to 65, offering health screenings, chronic disease care and help accessing medications. The county approved $35,000 in startup funding for Hands of Hope Clinic to operate the county-owned mobile unit.

WSB reports the first four stops are planned at local libraries in October, followed by monthly visits around the county.

Why it matters: For residents who struggle to access regular medical care, the mobile clinic could help catch and manage health problems before they become emergencies.

To get the October schedule, call Hands of Hope at 770-507-1344 or visit handsofhopeclinic.org

YOUR VOTE, YOUR TAXES

Last Call: Today Is the Last Day to Register to Vote

HENRY COUNTY - If you want a say on November 3, today’s the deadline to register. It takes about two minutes online.

Two tax questions are on the ballot too. FLOST is a new sales tax of up to one cent that would go entirely toward lowering property taxes. T-SPLOST 2 renews the one cent sales tax that pays for county road projects.

Why it matters: One decides your property tax bill. The other decides which roads get fixed. You can’t weigh in on either if you’re not registered.

FOR BUSINESS OWNERS

Georgia's Small Business Money Is Sitting There. Are You Tapping Into It?

$1.27 billion in financing since 2021. The advising that helped get it was free

GEORGIA - If you run a business in Henry County and haven't heard of the UGA Small Business Development Center, this is the most useful thing you'll read today.

The UGA SBDC just released its 2026 impact report, and the numbers are real. Since 2021, Georgia small businesses working with the SBDC have secured $1.27 billion in financing, generated $9.7 billion in sales, launched more than 2,200 businesses, and created over 15,000 jobs.

The part that matters most for you: the consulting is free. The SBDC runs 17 offices across Georgia and provides confidential, one-on-one business advising at no cost. Whether you're writing a business plan, trying to secure funding, or figuring out how to scale, they've seen it before.

Why it matters: Most small business owners don't know this resource exists. Georgia has 1.4 million small businesses. The ones growing fastest are often the ones who asked for help.

LEADERS IN FOCUS

For Carlotta Harrell, Service Started at Home

Henry County Commission Chair Carlotta Harrell

HENRY COUNTY - Growing up, Carlotta Harrell was surrounded by civil rights history. Her parents met through the movement. Her father sang with the Freedom Singers, and her mother sat in at lunch counters with John Lewis.

But what stuck with her most was watching them help people. Her father became a pastor, and his church kept clothes on hand for anyone who needed them.

“My dad was always helping somebody,” she said.

That foundation carried her through 20 years in law enforcement, including undercover narcotics work for the GBI, then years helping small-city mayors find funding. Today, as Commission Chair, her approach comes down to two words.

“Relationships matter.”
