Georgia Lawmakers Just Asked Governor Kemp to Investigate Stockbridge's Mayor

STOCKBRIDGE — We'll be honest, this isn't a story we enjoy running. But it's become the biggest story in Henry County right now, and you deserve to know what's happening. Five Georgia legislators sent a letter to Governor Kemp on August 13 asking for a state investigation into Mayor Jayden Williams, citing unauthorized use of city purchasing cards and gasoline purchases using municipal funds. The GBI is aware but hasn't been asked to investigate yet. Williams had no comment.

Why it matters: When five Georgia lawmakers write directly to the governor, the stakes have changed. The public hearing is Saturday, August 22. The Eagle Eye Digest will be there. Full story at Atlanta News First →

Good News for McDonough Homeowners. Your Property Tax Rate Isn't Going Up

MCDONOUGH — The McDonough City Council voted 5-0 on August 10 to maintain the city's property tax millage rate at 3.033 mills for another year. At this rate, the owner of a home with a fair market value of $100,000 would pay $121.32 in city property taxes. Taxes are due to the Henry County Tax Commissioner's Office on or before November 15, 2026.

Why it matters: With the cost of living rising across Henry County, keeping the tax rate flat is a meaningful decision for McDonough homeowners. Your city bill stays the same this year. Full story at Henry Herald →

Henry County Is Keeping a 242-Year-Old Secret

HENRY COUNTY — When Army Corps workers dredging Savannah Harbor discovered Revolutionary War cannons buried in the mud, the artifacts that came out of them ended up in Henry County. Rachel Black, Georgia's state archaeologist based here in Henry County, is now the keeper of a 242-year-old powder cartridge paper found packed inside one of the cannons — perfectly preserved after sitting underwater since the Siege of Savannah in 1779. "This is a once-in-a-career find," Black told WSB-TV. "I can't believe this is so intact." The cannons date back to when the Royal Navy scuttled its own ships to block the French fleet from attacking Savannah. The artifacts will go on public display for the first time in October at Fort Morris State Historic Site in Liberty County.

Why it matters: Henry County is home to the person responsible for preserving some of the most significant Revolutionary War artifacts ever found in Georgia. That's worth knowing about. Full story at WSB-TV →
