Heat Advisory Stretches Through July 4th

GEORGIA β€” Metro Atlanta is under another heat advisory, with heat index values climbing between 100 and 107 degrees. The dangerous heat will persist through the holiday weekend.

Why it matters: Stay hydrated, limit outdoor time, and check on elderly neighbors and pets. Read the forecast at FOX 5 Atlanta β†’

Stockbridge Opens Free Cooling Station Through Friday

STOCKBRIDGE β€” With temperatures pushing past 100 degrees this week, the City of Stockbridge has opened a free cooling station at Merle Manders Conference Center, 111 Davis Road. Water, ice, and seating are available for anyone who needs relief from the heat. The station is open Monday through Friday, June 29 through July 3, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and is free for all.

The 2024 BioLab Fire Was Worse Than We Knew

CONYERS β€” The 2024 BioLab fire happened just minutes from Henry County's northern border. New Georgia Tech research found bromide levels described as "unexpectedly high," with concentrations 21 miles away exceeding federal exposure guidelines by a factor of four.

Why it matters: Some Rockdale County residents still report health issues. With BioLab this close to home, the research is worth knowing. Read the findings at AJC β†’

Georgia Teachers Are Using AI in the Classroom

GEORGIA β€” More than half of Georgia teachers now use AI to plan lessons, including teachers right here in Henry County Schools. Teachers say it saves time but worry about student critical thinking.

Why it matters: Your kids' teachers are already using AI. Have you had that conversation at home? Read the full report at Georgia Recorder β†’

A Popular Hibachi and Sushi Chain Is Coming to McDonough

MCDONOUGH β€” Volcano Steak & Sushi, a popular hibachi and sushi chain with 10 active locations across Georgia and New Jersey, is planning an expansion to McDonough. Founder Quanren Lin confirmed the team is in the planning stages of a new location at 193 Highway 81 W, and Manager Andy Bazer says the company views McDonough as a growing area and an ideal next step for the brand. The new restaurant will be about 7,000 to 8,000 square feet, though construction hasn't started yet.

Why it matters: McDonough keeps landing on the radar of growing restaurant brands. The catch is patience. The team hopes to open by October 2027, so this is one to file away and watch develop over the next year. Read more at What Now Atlanta β†’

Georgia Fireworks Rules Before You Celebrate This Friday and Saturday

HENRY COUNTY β€” Before you light anything this holiday weekend, here's what Georgia law actually says. Fireworks are legal from 10 a.m. to 11:59 p.m. on July 3 and July 4, and on those days local noise ordinances cannot restrict your use within those hours. Buyers must be at least 18 years old and purchases must be made face-to-face with a valid ID. You cannot set off fireworks within 100 yards of hospitals, gas stations with over 500 gallons of fuel, water treatment facilities, or electric plants, and never within the right of way of any public road or railroad. One more thing worth knowing before you hand sparklers to little ones: sparklers burn at roughly 2,000 degrees and account for 29% of fireworks injuries in children under age 5.

Why it matters: Henry County issued its own burn ban earlier this year due to drought conditions. Before you buy, check current conditions at gatrees.org. And always keep a bucket of water nearby, light one device at a time, and soak spent fireworks in water before throwing them away. Full Georgia fireworks guide at FOX 5 Atlanta β†’
